Ngaumu Forest, Wairarapa

Sat 2 Aug 2003 - Individual  Classic Championship

Sun 3 Aug 2003 - Score Event

 Planned by Michael Wood for Orienteering Hutt Valley

 Terrain: Wairarapa hill country with plantation forest including some logged areas. Forest roads, skidder tracks, single track, elevation range 200m. Mapped by Michael Wood of MAPsport Services for the 2001 NZ Champs and updated 2002, 2003.  Scale 1:20,000, contours 10m.

 Saturday: Fourth Wellington MTBO  Classic-distance Championship, a fixed-sequence event with interval starts between 12:30 and 2pm.

 Sunday: Wellington MTBO Score Championship, take controls in any order within a fixed time of 2 hours. Massed start at 10am.

 Entries: Form and fuller details on the MTBO website www.mapsport.co.nz/mtbo/mtbo.html Pre-entry by 23 July.

 Selection: With the 2003 NZ Champs in doubt this may be New Zealand's top MTBO competition this year, and the best chance for preparation for the first official Australia-New Zealand MTBO Challenge. We don't know how the NZOF selectors are going to choose the team (the challenge has only just been made and accepted), but riding here would seem to be highly relevant. Orienteering Hutt Valley Sprint-O, MTBO and Rogaine Pioneers

From the Wairarapa Club point of view :

We hope to run some events that will also include Mountain Bike Orienteering.  We tried one in 1999 - but due to the extra work involved for a small club  and the overgrown terrain of some of our Maps, we had problems including it with an "Ordinary Foot O" Event.  

Since then we have participated in the events organised by Hutt Valley Orienteering Club.  (See below)

It helps to treat MTBO navigation in the same way as Foot "O" where you orientate the map as you travel.

1  Whitby Forest is the MTBO version of part of the Duck Creek Map

Sorry the maps are old used ones - but you will get the picture.  You can see some of the tracks marked on Duck Creek - or where they can go.  The clearings (in yellow) are pretty much the same.  A little bit more of the unrunnable area has been added to Whitby to show the access from the residential area.

2    This is the Tunnel Gully Map at Te Marua

This map was used for Race 2.
 Plenty of tracks, downhills and uphills and route choices.

3    St. Patricks Forest

Started and finished east of the River in the Moonshine Reserve.
Entry to the Forest was through a culvert under SH2 then into the hills

4    Waitarere Forest
